about

Laments for the Gilbert Bridge. The bridge was constructed in 1972 in honour of our own dear leader and his work in advancing experimental music. Work began on the Irene Bridge, which was to follow the same span but in the opposite direction. Unfortunately the money ran out - leaving unhappy travellers able to go over Gilbert but not make the return journey via Irene; hundreds were stranded on one side. Reluctantly the City authorities had no alternative but demolish both Gilbert and Irene. All that remains is this sign, which you still see today in EC2.

This album uses tape loops created from the recordings of the SOXSA chamber orchestra and choir to create an audio backdrop to an exhibition celebrating the history of the bridge.

Bonus track 'Didcot Parkway' is about about a train journey on the Great Western Railway to visit the area.

Bonus track 'Aphantasia' explores Gilbert's inability to form mental images. He has no mind's eye.
