about

In 1952 Gilbert and Irene travelled from Oxfordshire to Colonsay by train and ferry and wrote these short pieces inspired by their journey around the island. This album is a musical tour of this unique place. By turns rugged, soft, idyllic, workaday, lonely and peopled. Within a few short miles the landscape sweeps from brutalist built environment by way of fairytale landscaped woodland garden, to turquoise water shell-sand beaches and Atlantic wind battered headlands.

Limited by what they could carry, they brought the SOXSA choir along on 1/4" magnetic tape and a portable (for the times) reel to reel tape recorder.

In the 2022 recreation of the same route, we used the rather more portable Organelle 'music computer' together with SOXSA's own 'Tape Synth++' patch.
